I love puzzles, and Puzzmo has lots of them. Not only that, they’re neatly designed, super entertaining, and social.
Feel free to add me as a friend! (I’m https://www.puzzmo.com/user/zk/bomberstudios).
]]>They also enjoy drinking from the same glass. I find that lovely, but it makes it really hard for them to make predictions about when they’ll run out of wine, or cheese:
— We’ve run out of wine but still have cheese left. Let’s pour another glass.
— Ah, now we’ve run out of cheese but there’s still some wine left. Let’s get some more cheese.
Rinse and repeat until they finish their wine and cheese at the same time.
]]>So I took that as a sign to finally start using a “forever editor” like vim or emacs.
I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for emacs. My brother used to hack it by smashing his IBM Model M keyboard back in the day, and we bonded a lot geeking over its magical powers.
I also have a strong desire to use Org Mode, which is only available inside emacs.
My brain is still not onboard with this plan, but I’ve decided to use the same approach I used when I learned to touch-type: ignore logic and start moving. I’ll get there, eventually.
We’ll see how it goes!
]]>While this recipe is no substitute for a great flat white, it’s definitely better than no flat white. You will need an AeroPress, a way to boil water, and a way to froth your milk. I used a small protein shaker and 30 seconds of vigorous arm movement, but you can Google for better options.
Still, I tried to stay away from “fancy” coffee (or, as my friends like to call it, “fussy coffee”) for as long as I could. I tend to obsess about new things and I did not need another distraction in my life.
But there’s only so much instant coffee you can drink before you start thinking “maybe the coffee at home should be better than this?”.
So, about two years ago I gave up and decided, finally, to go down this rabbit hole.
I’ll save you the details of my descend to madness, and fast forward to February 2023 to give you the recipe I’m using to make what I consider a very nice cup of coffee.
This brews a very nice cup of black coffee (around 200ml). You can mix it with 150ml of milk for a large latte that’s also pretty good.
For my birthday, my friend Mariángeles gave me a wink and a cassette tape.
When I got back home that night and played it on my walkman, I had my mind blown to pieces. That album changed the way I listen to music, forever.
I have since lost the tape, and my friend’s phone number (don’t judge me, things were different back then).
But I will never lose the memory of the way Chemical Brothers made me feel the first time I listened to Exit Planet Dust.
Listen in Spotify, Apple Music or, if you have the chance, a crunchy cassette tape player.
]]>That is, believe it or not, exactly what happened to me and my friends with Laurent Garnier - Excess Luggage. Only we called that something completely different. For us, he was (and will always be) “DJ Jamón from Japan” (he played his set at Sonar 2000 under a pseudonym).
The set he played at 7:30 at the terrace of Complex Esportiu Municipal La Mar Bella was not only an awesome homage to house classics, but also the perfect soundtrack for a sunrise on the beach. I still get goosebumps whenever I play this record, and have no words to describe how grateful I am that it exists.
I imagine it will be available at most streaming platforms, but here’s a version you can play for free on SoundCloud.
Enjoy!
]]>So let me try to honor them by compiling a list on my blog, record by record.
Today: Various - Lazy Dog, a double mixed CD that I can only describe as “the best house music ever, flawlessly mixed by two masters of their trade”. Disc 1 is mixed by Ben Watt, disc 2 is mixed by Jay Hannah. I can’t choose a favourite.
I saw these chaps live in Barcelona a very long time ago, playing an awesome set that had the most epic ending I’ve ever experienced. By closing time, when the club turned on the lights and shut down the turntables, people kept clapping and dancing. The DJs then started spinning records pushing them with their hands until the club shut down the speakers and security started pushing the (very happy, and smily) crowd out of the venue.
10/10 would repeat that night.
I searched for the record on Spotify and Apple Music and could not find it, so I suspect the only place where you can listen to it is SounCloud:
]]>I went over all the other options over the Christmas break in case there was something better out there, but (at least for me) nothing beats Notability in terms of usability, features, and pricing.
]]>I spend a lot of time using electronic tools for thought, but have never felt anything remotely close to what Adams describes.
Maybe it’s time to start looking for better tools.
